SPECIAL GENERAL MEETING
DATE: Wednesday, 21 May 2025
Proposed “Objects of the Association”
“To provide palliative care that enhances the quality of life for individuals with life-limiting or life-threatening illnesses, prioritizing those with advanced or complex needs. The organization shall address the physical, emotional, social, practical, intellectual, and spiritual needs of patients and their families to improve comfort, dignity, and well-being.”
Notice To Members
We propose to amend the Objects clause of our constitution to better reflect the evolving scope of palliative care and to align our organizational mandate with contemporary best practices, while acknowledging resource limitations.
Key Reasons for the Amendment
(click arrows to expand each point):
Broader Inclusivity:
The existing clause focuses primarily on terminally ill patients in the final stages of life. Modern palliative care principles emphasize support for all individuals with life-limiting or life-threatening illnesses, not only those imminently dying. This change allows us to serve a wider group of patients who can benefit from improved quality of life through symptom management and holistic support.
Prioritization Reflecting Resource Constraints:
While broadening eligibility, it is important to recognize our limited resources. The amendment introduces a prioritization of patients with advanced or complex needs, ensuring that those most in need receive timely and appropriate care. This pragmatic approach balances our mission with operational realities.
Holistic Care Emphasis:
The revised wording explicitly affirms our commitment to addressing the full spectrum of patient and family needs – physical, emotional, social, practical, intellectual, and spiritual – which is central to quality palliative care. This reinforces our focus on comfort, dignity, and overall well-being.
Alignment with National and International Standards:
The amendment aligns our constitutional objectives with the World Health Organization’s definition of palliative care and South Africa’s National Policy Framework, positioning the organization for future growth and potential funding opportunities.
Summary
This amendment ensures that our constitution accurately reflects the scope and priorities of our services today, supports sustainable and effective care delivery, and maintains our commitment to holistic, patient-centered care.
We recommend the Members approve this amendment to enable the organization to continue fulfilling its mission in a manner responsive to both patient needs and operational capacity.
