Highway Hospice is a registered non-profit organisation that has served Durban for over forty years, providing palliative and end-of-life care to patients with life-limiting illness and their families. In 2026 we are re-opening our In-Patient Unit (IPU) to offer short-stay symptom control, respite and end-of-life care alongside our long-established Homecare service.
The Role
The primary purpose of this position is to provide a professional and efficient reception service to the association, patients, donors, visitors, volunteers etc
The Warm Welcome: Provide an empathetic reception service to patients, donors, visitors, and volunteers.
Switchboard Excellence: Efficiently answer and direct calls to the correct personnel.
Donation Management: Attend to the public, coordinate with security to assist donors with off-loading goods, and accurately receipt cash and physical donations.
Office Logistics: Manage the daily sign-in/out process for collections and deliveries.
Environment Curator: Ensure the reception area remains pristine, professional, and stocked with the necessary information and pamphlets for families.
To provide assistance with ad hoc tasks to the team including HOD’s in all departments mainly IPU and Homecare/Medical as and when required and to assist in the co-ordination of the volunteer records.

Our NPO is looking for a Mid-Level experienced and professional Receptionist to join us as a long-term member of our organisation.
This isn’t just a desk job; you are the first smile our visitors, patients and their families as well as our donors see. If you have a genuine passion for the NPO sector, we want to meet with you. We are looking for an individual who has a true passion for front-of-house excellence.
- Education: Minimum Matric certificate
- Experience: Minimum five (5) years of experience as a Mid-Level Receptionist with an Administrative background
- Tech Skills: Highly computer literate and tech-savvy
- Personality: Naturally bubbly, fun, and energetic, yet possessing the emotional strength to handle challenging tasks and interactions
- Attributes: Exceptional organisational skills and a proactive, “can-do” attitude
- A genuine heart for patient dignity and family support
- Fluency in English
Added Advantages
- Previous experience within a Non-Profit Organisation (NPO), Medical, Healthcare, Hospice.
- Experience in a Medical environment an added bonus (familiarity with Medical Aid Billing).
- A proven ability to balance empathy and sympathy with professional boundaries.
Conditions
- Fixed-term contract, subject to donor funding (renewal possible).
- Hours: Mainly office-hour based (08h00–16h00 Monday to Friday) with occasional evening and weekend work
- Three-month probation.
- Remuneration market-related, commensurate with qualifications and experience.
- Location: Highway Hospice, Sherwood, Durban.
