Covid-19 and Cancer

Palliative care is a specialised area of medicine, and so we pay careful attention to scientific evidence and medical consensus. Of late there has been discussion of the term “Turbo Cancer” for which there is no evidence or consensus. The clinical trials on COVID-19 as a tool to reduce cancerous tumour growth; is also yet to be proven scientifically. We manage the care of terminally ill patients, and lean heavily on the concepts of love, hope and faith. Our patients and their families are in a very vulnerable and sensitive space, conspiracy theories and unproven opinion can add to their stress unnecessarily.

Elisabeth Kübler-Ross in her 1969 book “On Death and Dying” first published what she called the stages of grief. As a theory, it has received criticism regarding the specific’s and the order of experience. However, as human beings we can relate to the path towards acceptance. Interestingly, this final goal is the only positive emotion of them all. The balance can only be addressed with the truth. It is therefore not surprising that truth is a palliative care cornerstone when dealing with the grief of slowly losing your own life; or the loss of a loved one.

“Is it loving to provide false hope”?, “Is it loving to provide false fear”? I am sure we can agree that nothing but the truth matters, not only in palliative care, but indeed holistically in life. Words, opinions and concepts can easily be shared these days in social media, so be aware of the truth within them and the reasons they are formulated in the first place. As we say here at The Highway Hospice, “Every Day Matters”, and so we encourage you to fill those days with love, positivity and truth.
